4 Tips for keeping your teeth healthy this festive season!

1. Only use your teeth for smiling and eating

It is important to remember not to use your teeth for any other purposes that may increase the risk of breaking them. For example, breaking sticky tape or ribbon when wrapping presents or opening bottles with your teeth may cause damage. The last thing you want at Christmas is a broken/ sore tooth.

2. Maintain a good oral health routine

We know this can be hard especially when travelling but keeping your teeth healthy requires you to maintain a good routine of brushing 2 x daily and flossing 1 x daily, which will help protect your teeth and counteract those Christmas treats. Ensure you wait 30 minutes after eating or drinking anything high in sugar/ acid before brushing, as during this time you can wear away the enamel.

3. Choose your foods wisely

We know Christmas is one of the best times to enjoy delicious food and drink with family and friends and indulging in some sweet treats over the Christmas period is totally fine! However be mindful of your sugar intake and include fresh fruits and cheese platters which can help satisfy that sweet tooth. Be sure to drinks lots of water, this not only keeps you hydrated in the warmer months but helps flush out and neutralise sugars and acids from food and drink consumed.

Always make sure you are careful when biting down on very hard lollies like candy canes, toffees, nuts and pork crackling! Eating hard foods like these can result in damage to your teeth, including broken or chipped teeth which will require emergency dental care - not ideal when you’re trying to enjoy the holidays!

4. Minimise the risk of Dental Trauma

One of the best parts of Christmas is having friends and family together and often this may include activities like games, sports, or testing out those new toys Santa brought!

Ensure you are careful when playing with new bikes, scooters, trampolines etc. If you do suffer from any dental trauma over the Christmas period please get in contact with our clinic asap or attend Canberra Hospital who has an emergency on call dentist.  Please make sure to email us if you can’t through on the phone and we will get back to you as quickly as we can.
