What is an occlusal splint?
An Occlusal Splint is a custom-made removable appliance made of medical grade acrylic/resin that covers all the biting surfaces of upper or lower teeth.
Occlusal splints may be indicated for patients who have jaw/muscle pain or headaches, temporomandibular disorders (TMD) or patients who display excessive wear of their teeth from clenching or grinding (bruxism). It will allow the jaw to find a favourable position because the splint prevents the teeth from locking together, reducing the load on jaw muscles and prevent excessive forces on the teeth. Splints help protect natural teeth and restorations from further wear & reduces risk of cracking or breaking of teeth, can help to relieve jaw joint pain and muscle pain.
Sometimes additional treatments is also required in addition to an occlusal splint such as physiotherapy or botox injections to help relax the force of your biting muscles. Your dentist will discuss all required treatments and options with you.
