Crowns and bridges

At Higgins Dental we offer the option of Same Day Crowns

Same day crowns means you only have to attend for a single appointment. Your crown will be made on-site while you wait by our in house milling machine instead of being sent to an external laboratory.  This means less time out of your busy life and no need for annoying temporary crowns!

First we prepare your tooth for the crown which usually involves shaping the tooth.  Then we take a digital impression of your teeth with our high end 3D scanner, design your bespoke crown with digital software and finally send this to our in house milling machine which will fabricate your custom-made porcelain crown.  Finally we will complete the final customisation by glazing the crown and place it in the furnace. Once ready your crown will then be bonded onto your tooth.

What is a crown?

A dental crown is a large restoration or cap which encases the visible surface of the tooth. Crowns are the ideal option to restore and extend the functional life of extensively broken-down teeth.

Crowns can be used to:

  • To restore a heavily broken down or decayed tooth

  • To restore a cracked tooth and reduce the risk of further damage

  • To protect and strengthen a tooth that is weak and at risk of breaking

  • To anchor a dental bridge into position

  • To correct discoloration or misalignment of teeth

  • Protecting a tooth following root canal therapy

Crowns are made of either porcelain or metal based materials such as gold. The location in the mouth, amount of tooth structure remaining and overall oral health will determine the best material for your individual situation. Your dentist will thoroughly assess this and discuss your treatment options with you.

What is a bridge?

A dental bridge is an option used to replace either one or multiple missing teeth. Bridges use the adjacent tooth/teeth for support for a ‘pontic’ or replacement tooth. As the name implies, this appliance “bridges the gap” left behind by a missing tooth.  Bridges are permanently cemented in place and commonly made out of a porcelain-based material.
